Oh, the vanity…

I have a gut feeling that The Cat in the Hat will turn out to be Mike Myers’ “Hudson Hawk.”

couple of dopesUpdate: Bill commented that the Cat in the Hat makeup was very similar to the Grinch makeup that Jim Carrey wore a few years ago in The Grinch. Here’s a side-by-side comparison. I suppose some similarities are to be expected, as they’re both based on Dr. Seuss characters. The producers probably went after the same team who did The Grinch, because, well, it was a pretty good transformation.

  1. Charles Taylor (a critic I usually agree with) in Salon says:
“It’s not worth your money. Not even one look. Mike Myers has butchered a great children’s book.”

Dommage. The cinematography looked great in the previews.

  2. I’ve heard it’s a product placement fiesta too. There was an ad on TV last night showing Meyers’ Cat in the Hat promoting chemical cleaning products in that sing-songy Dr. Seuss manner. Rhyming off what brand-name chemicals to use for each cleaning need. (Toxic house syndrome anyone?)

  3. I bought Hudson Hawk for ten bucks when I was on a Bruce Willis kick last year. Never have so many otherwise enjoyable actors caused me so much pain.

  4. I’m not sure what lead to Myers’ decision to play the Cat as Charles Nelson Riley but, really, I don’t care anymore. I fell off the Mike Myers Love Train years ago. Sure, he’s funny as Shrek but if you look at it, he’s actually a comedian of very limited ability. He schtick consists of over anxious mugging for the camera and those horrible accents.

I don’t know why Hollywood does this. (okay I do – $$$) But did somebody actually read the book and think, “I can improve on this”? Oh well, another childhood memory ruined.

I think ‘Elf’ looks like a better bet. Also, I hope to spend the holidays answering the phone like Will Ferrell in that movie: “Air Canada. John speaking. What’s your favourite colour?”

  5. Is it just me, or does the Cat in the Hat makeup look exactly like the Grinch makeup in white?
