There’s a small blurb on the cover of Jeffrey Moore’s new novel, "The Memory Artists." It says "A young writer of whom more will surely be heard." (Sunday Telegraph)
The "young" Moore is 52 years old. He would have been an infantile 47 when his first novel (from which this blurb likely originates) was released.

“Young” seems sometimes to reflect how long someone
has been doing something, rather than their age.
Years ago, when a friend had a baby at 36, her mother
referred to her as a “young mother”. The only way it made
sense was that she meant “new mother”.

A few years back some dirt was revealed about one of our Illinois politicians (it’s always something with them!) having an affair. The man in question referred to it as a ‘youthful indiscretion’ . He was 42 when he engaged in his ‘indiscretion’.

So blork, are you admitting that you’re old?

Moore is a friend of mine (I went to high school with him) so I know how old he is: 45. His first novel was published when he was 39. Not young, but by novelist’s standards, not exactly old either. In any case, the mistake (if there is one) was made by a British critic.
