As seen from Mont-Royal, circa 1989 (scan from slide). The highly visible street on the left is Avenue Mont-Royal, and the one on the right is Rue Rachel. When I first saw this view, the neighbourhood (known as Plateau Mont-Royal) seemed like a vast wasteland of endless red brick triplexes. That was in 1986. I took this photo not long after moving into that "wasteland" and soon after discovered it was a wonderful place. I lived there, in various apartments, from 1989 to 1993, then again from 1995 to 2001, and again from 2002-2003. I wrote about it more, here
