Holiday traditions

When does a ritual become a tradition? Last year I mentioned that Martine and I have a holiday ritual in which we burn a piece of the previous year’s Christmas tree while we decorate the tree for the current year. I referred to it as a “ritual,” but this is the third year in a row in which we did it, and we have a bit of stump from this year’s tree already set aside for Christmas 2007 – so I think it has officially become a “tradition.”

Another holiday tradition is that every year, while hanging the lights on the tree, I say to Martine, “Jeez, to think they used to stick candles on these things. Talk about a fire hazard!” She, as is the tradition, nods as if she hasn’t heard it before.

Yeah, but throwing last year’s can of aerosol snow in there would be a lot more fun. Maybe ease yourself into it with a few butane-laced pine cones.

Well, the meaning of the Yule log is age-old, and you have managed to incorporate the concept of fire as life-giving element oh I just lost my train of thought.

I think I meant to say you seem very wise, even if you don’t know it.

The cat swallowing tinsel was a tradition at our place, or am I just channeling old Chevy Chase movies?

At our place it’s the dog getting tinsel all over him and dragging it all over the house.

Real candles would definitely be a bad idea, seeing as how yesterday the entire tree came crashing down on my little sister.

tinsel brings cats and dogs to the emergency vet all the way in the west island every year. 2000$ later if you’re lucky, you get to bring the pet home. So beware.

No tinsel for us. Just tree sap all over the cat’s head.
    He smells pretty good, though.

Yay! I can’t wait to adopt your fire log tradition next year.

I love these kinds of traditions. Ours is the arguement..ahem, I mean discussion about how/when to bring the Christmas tree into the house. Gotta love Christmas.
