Christmas rituals

Last night Martine and I decorated our Christmas tree. We started a ritual last year in which, during the trimming of the new tree we burn a piece of the stump cut from the previous year’s tree. Let me tell you, not much burns faster or brighter than a piece of spruce that’s been drying in the basement all year.

crackle!

This year’s tree has been in place since we bought it on Sunday, and The Mini, who loves to climb trees outside, had largely ignored it while it sat there undecorated. That was a good sign.

Despite a sore back that I’ve been nursing since the weekend, we managed to put together a pretty nice tree I think. But if you look in the lower right corner, you might see that a certain someone has found something he’d like to play with.

crackle!

Here’s a close-up of the attempted attack. As of this morning he hasn’t wrecked it yet. Fingers are crossed.

We once had a cat, named Tribble, who would like nothing better than to grab one of our (hopefully unbreakable) Christmas decoration, carry it to the bathroom and drop it in the toilet.

I hope he does not take a d… under this tree either…

    All right, all right… I am going…

Luckily, Frances doesn’t play with the decorations. She does, however, drink from the reservoir. Which is okay, because it means I can forget to give her water when hew bowl runs dry.

I remember once when I was a kid we were visiting some neighbors who had just finished doing up their tree. While we were all standing around the tree admiring it the entire tree began shaking. All seven kittens from a new litter 6 or 7 weeks earlier thought it would be a great idea to play chase up this tree. They almost all made it up to the top before the tree toppled over. Then they did the scatter drill.

plastic balls are the only answer. and somehow secure the tree. it may not “fall” tofay or tomorrow, but it will “fall”. now, Mini, notice i did not say you would have anything to do with it. i just think that at some point, the tree will “feel like” going down…

Our balls are plastic. (That sounds funny.) So far so good. Mini only seems to be interested in the tree when we are around it. He just has to be in the way.

Yeah, I’ve read that vets are now implanting them into castrated dogs. So we know where you get them.
