    When did they become the STM? Weren’t they the STCUM? Or were they getting fed up with all the rude jokes people were making about their name?

    They switched to STM about a year or two ago. I think it was probably due to the rude jokes.

    The joke is lost on most québécois francophone so no, it was not because of the jokes, it was indeed because of the merger. It’s no longer “la communauté urbaine de Montréal” but plain old “Montréal”.

    I never even realized how funny it sounded until Blork pointed it to me!
